The Sweet Side of Love: Wedding Dessert Options

The Sweet Side of Love: Wedding Dessert Options

The sweetest part of your wedding is the cake when it comes to food, that is. Surprisingly, not many couples get to taste the wedding cake, besides at the test tasting. Except maybe when they cake in their faces by their new spouse.

The cake is the final thing you and your guests will most probably eat, so it should be a memorable one.
If you are like me, as a bride-to-be, I am mesmerized by the art of making a wedding cake.

I've spent some time looking at wedding cake making a decorating, mesmerized at the amount of talent it takes to create a masterpiece of a cake. It's no wonder cakes could easily add up to a few hundred or even thousands!

Below are some options you can consider when choosing your wedding cake and/or desserts.

Cake Topper

Let's start at the top, the cake topper. The cake topper is usually literally a decoration at the top of the cake, used to represent the couple. Before, couples used florals and eventually figurines of the bride and the groom and now even laser cut intricate designs and much more.

Below are some of the most commonly used cake toppers.

Traditional

This is usually the bride and groom figurines at the top of the cake. Although the figurine couple was only in a pose standing next to each other (and were usually pretty much one color and design), now they are customizable.

You can make the figurines out of ceramic, plastic, fondant, chocolate or print it 3D, etc.... the possibilities are endless!

The beauty about this is that you and your fiance will be able to customize the color, figure, clothes and pose to represent who you are as a couple. For example, you could choose a funny pose, dress as skiers, or have your figurines have highlights and resemble your body types.

Monogram/Sign

There is also an option that is more modern, monograms and sings. These are usually laser cut prases or monograms.

These could also be customized to reflect you as a couple. You can choose to include the monogram, as pictured below, of you and your husband's initials.

Another option that is becoming more popular phrases as cake toppers. These are usually words or phrases that the couple wants to highlight. Some examples are:
  • Love
  • Mr & Mrs
  • Mr & Mrs [Your Last Name]
  • [Last Name]
  • Best Day Ever
  • Happily Ever After
  • The Hunt is Over
  • [Bible Verse]
Etc.
You can sometimes find these at stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels. If you want a custom one, I recommend Etsy.

The Cake

Now that we've got some options for the topper, let's talk about cake!

I know my favorite part is the cake, I have a sweet tooth.

The cake is a tradition that has been going on for a long time. It's a sweet way to reward your guests, and a way to start your lives together in a sweet tone.

More affordable alternatives are to bake your cake yourself, have a loved one do it, or simply buy a small cake for pictures and purchase sheet cake at Costo (or another chain store).

There are so many videos on YouTube to help you bake the perfect cake! Different flavors, tips for tiers, buttercream, and other fillings...the possibilities are endless! I would recommend practicing ahead of time and making sure you have extra fridge space to keep it chill for a few days until your wedding date.

Here is one I found informative, entertaining and helpful:

If you aren't a fan of frosting, you may opt for a naked or semi-naked (only a little bit of buttercream on the outside).

Whether you choose to purchase/make a cake or replace your cake with another beautiful dessert sculpture make sure it tastes amazing and that it reflects who you are as a couple. Besides, taste testing is one of the best parts of wedding planning!

Dessert Tables

Some couples may decide to skip cake altogether and opt for an increasingly popular option: dessert tables.

Some couples may have a one layer small cake for pictures of the cutting of the cake, while others completely choose to not include that.

This is really convenient because you get to have fun customizing your dessert table. Also, having a dessert table, you will be able to cater to a variety of guests (guests who possess a sweet tooth, while also including other desserts for guests who prefer something less sweet).

While putting your dessert table together, make sure to keep in mind the costs of everything, as it could easily add up.

Candy Table

Chocolate fountain, chocolates, Mexican candy, caramel apples, caramel, etc!

Another way some couples decide to treat their guests is with a candy table. These, like the cakes, can be customized to reflect the couple and maybe the guests' preferences.

Other Alternatives

Some couples choose to do some other sweet alternative. Here are some of the most popular and creative sweet alternatives I have seen around the internet:
  • Donut wall: this DIY project is perfect for couples who are having a morning wedding or who simply love donuts.
  • Smores bar: especially great for an outdoor wedding, served towards the end of the party!
  • Pies! These could be your favorite or go with the season you're getting married in.
  • Sundae bar: super yummy, just make sure you have enough freezer space available for all that yummy ice cream.
  • Alternative sweet tower: Maybe, you simply aren't a fan of cake or, you prefer another dessert like macaroons, cookies, merengue or even pancakes! Below is a croquembouche cake a couple chose as a wedding cake. They simply choose to place the cake topper, besides the tower.

Whether you choose to do a cake, a small one for pictures or a dessert table make sure you enjoy them. The dessert should be a reflection of who you are as a couple. Enjoy the taste testing, the aesthetics, and make sure to sneak in a piece of dessert on your wedding day!

Here's to a sweet start to the rest of your lives!

  1. Love the sweet tower, not as an alternative but as an addition 😊
