Wedding Ready Beauty: Hair

Your look is something you will keep forever in your photographs. Your hair is one of the important aspects of your wedding look.

Your hair, how it looks, feels, the length, the color, style all has an important role to play in your wedding look.

Below are some tips to help you achieve beautiful hair, and some examples too, for your wedding day.

Before: the Care

Having beautiful hair on your wedding day starts months before your big day. It doesn't matter if you have long or short hair, hair-care is essential for beautiful manageable hair.

It's important that you go to a professional, someone who can assess your hair situation and recommend products that will benefit your hair. If you don't have the money to go to a professional, simple at home remedies can do as well.

It's important to start your hair care with time, especially if you are planning to grow your hair. If you are trying to grow your hair you will need to start months in advance!

Shampoo & Conditioner

These are the basic staples of your hair care. Look for a shampoo that is sulfate free preferably. One tip is to wash your hair every other day to allow your natural hair oils to nourish your hair.

If you have colored your hair, it's important to look for a sulfate free combo is specifically for treating colored hair.

Deep Conditioning & Treatments

Deep conditioning is a great treat for your hair. It's important to do this once a week. There are many deep conditioning treatments out there, but there are also some home treatments as well. With all of these masks it's important to massage, then apply a shower cap (or plastic bag) and leave for 15-30 mins before washing your hair. The following are some of my favorites to promote healthy growth and shine:
  • I personally love coconut oil! I warm up some coconut oil in the microwave and massage it into my hair, leaving it 15-30 mins before I shower.
  • Another way to treat your hair is through exfoliating your scalp. A simple scalp exfoliant can be made by combining brown sugar and extra virgin olive oil.
  • You can also combine various oils and other natural resources (i.e. honey, mashed strawberries, ginger). For example castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil and, argan oil.
  • Another mask I have heard is made by combining 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 4 of natural yogurt, and 1 egg.
Whatever mask you may choose to make, make sure to only apply them every 1 week (or twice a week if your hair is very damaged). Massaging your scalp is also very important since it stimulates the blood flow and promotes healthy hair growth.

In Between Washes

It's important to always keep your hair nourished. In between washes you can use a dry shampoo on your scalp or some leave-in conditioner at your ends. This is optional.

It's important not to overload your hair with product. This will clog your scalp by causing build-up.

The Color

You can choose to go with highlights, be a red-head, simply go with some baby-lights or go with some crazy color. It's important to always test this with your hairstylist time in advance!

Testing the hair color or highlights will allow the color to fully develop. Most importantly, this will give you (with the guidance of your hairstylist) to fix any possible issues and improve on the style.

You definitely want to consult a professional for your color. You don't want to end up with patches of color and much less to end up with a very yellow bleach look (unless that's what you're going for). Or worse, you don't want to end up causing more damage to your hair than you can repair!

Go with a colorist you trust and make the investment if you want to color your hair for your wedding.

The Hairstyle

After all that care and investment comes the big day! It's important to test your hairstyle before your wedding. It would be especially helpful if you have your veil piece.

Test your hairstyle whether you're having a professional do it, a loved one, or even yourself! It's important that you know what products to have or what specific technique and tools to use.

Updo

This hairstyle is ideal for medium to long hair lengths. This style requires minimal (if any) touch-ups throughout your day.

The tools and product that you will need greatly depends on the type of style/vibe that you are going for. For example, for a bun, you can have a ballerina bun or a more beachy/boho look that will be messier or even a romantic style!

Below are some videos that I have found helpful:

Half-up Half-down

This hairstyle can go with medium to long hair lengths (or even a lob!). This may require some touch-ups throughout the day if you are going for a very put together look.

This is a pretty popular hairstyle since it's basically the best of both worlds. It can keep your hair out of your face like a bun can but it also provides the texture and volume that having your hair down can bring.

Below are some videos of some tutorials I have tried in the past for other occasions:

Down

Any hair length. This is a beautiful hairstyle and it may need to be touched up at some point.

This is a beautiful look, whether you have short, medium or long hair. You can add some accessories like a floral crown or hairpins (i.e. with decorations at the end to add something extra). Be careful if you are having a wedding outside where it's hot or windy, for it will cause problems with your hair.

Below are some videos to give you ideas on how you can style your hair.
